Rebel Moon Review: More Like Dune (Than Star Wars)

The Star Wars connection hyped everybody. But Rebel Moon is not the next Star Wars. And it was never supposed to be. It’s rough, not dreamy. Bloody and brutal instead of otherworldly and spiritual. More similar to the weird and solemn Dune.

Why Planet of the Apes (1968) Is More Than a Movie About Talking Monkeys

Planet of the Apes is an American science fiction movie from 1968 that challenges how we judge intelligence and identity. It has a solid story told with masterful pacing and visual storytelling. It’s an ancient tale retold, from when we were living in caves – the fear of apes taking over. Planet of the Apes challenges our familiarity to what we know as true, as all great movies do.

A Story of Visionaries Without Sight: The Miracle Worker (1962) Review

A close-up of Anne Bancroft as Anne Sullivan, looking exhausted and frustrated. The background is a dark and stormy sky.

“The Miracle Worker” is a 1962 biographical movie about Helen Keller, one of the most inspiring people to ever live. She lost her sight and hearing before the age of two. With the help of a Anne Sullivan, a true mentor, she learned how to read (letters from Mark Twain), write (to Gandhi) and enjoy Charlie Chaplin movies (in the company of Charlie Chaplin).

Blue Beetle: A Great Origin Story

A movie poster for Blue Beetle, a dark and mysterious superhero film.

Blue Beetle is a fun and action packed movie with a similar tone to the new DC live-action projects like Peacemaker and The Flash. It embraces humor and gritty action.

It’s a straight forward adventure that frees the audience from the challenge of answering: “Where does this fit in the multiverse?”. Besides a few mentions of Batman, it’s not directly connected to any other DC movies.

And the only Justice League you will see is Blue Beetle’s family.

Thoughs on: Wolf (1994) with Jack Nicholson

A photo of Michelle Pfeiffer holding Jack Nicholson’s from behind in a dark night scene. The title WOLF is written in yellow at the bottom.

Ever wanted to see Jack Nicholson turn into a werewolf? Then “Wolf” is worth a watch. It combines romance, horror, and a furry Jack Nicholson. But despite the promising premise, it’s a mellow and constrained movie. The selling point (the werewolf aspect) comes across more as a leitmotif than a feature, but the movie had a decent level of nose curling and teeth showing.
